What to Wear for Family Photos
I know choosing outfits for family photos can feel like the most stressful part of the whole experience — but I promise, it does not have to be complicated. The goal is not for everyone to match perfectly. The goal is for everyone to feel comfortable, confident, and like themselves.
Start with Mom's Outfit
The easiest place to start is with mom’s outfit first. Choose something you love and feel beautiful in, because once you have your outfit picked out, it becomes so much easier to coordinate everyone else around it.
A flowy dress, a cute sweater with jeans, or a simple outfit in a soft neutral color photographs beautifully. Once mom’s outfit is picked, pull colors from that outfit for the rest of the family.
Colors
For family photos, I always recommend muted earth tones and soft neutrals. Colors like cream, ivory, beige, camel, tan, sage green, dusty blue, soft brown, rust, terracotta, olive, and muted blush all photograph beautifully together. Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, try mixing a few shades within the same palette. For example, mom in a cream dress, dad in olive or tan, one child in dusty blue, and another in a soft beige sweater.
I always recommend avoiding neon colors, bright red, large logos, super busy patterns, or everyone wearing the exact same outfit. Coordinating always photographs better than matching.
You can piece these colors together from both horizontal and vertical line parings.

Add Texture
Textures also make a huge difference in photos. Linen, knits, denim, cotton, corduroy, and flowy fabrics add so much warmth and depth without being distracting. Layers like cardigans, sweaters, jackets, or little suspenders for boys can make outfits feel even more put together.
Where to Shop?
If you are not sure where to shop, some of my favorite places for family photo outfits are Target, Old Navy, H&M, Gap, Zara, Carter’s, Rylee + Cru, and Amazon. These stores usually have great neutral options for moms, dads, and kids, which makes it easier to put together outfits that feel cohesive.
Most Importantly: I want you to feel good!
One of my favorite tips is to lay everyone's outfits out on the floor together before your session. When you can see everything side by side, it is so much easier to tell if the colors work well together.
Most importantly, wear something you feel good in. When you feel comfortable and confident, it always shows in your photos.
I am so excited for your session and cannot wait to capture your family exactly as you are! Your photos do not need to be perfect to be beautiful — they just need to feel like you!

PRO TIP: While at the session, smile through EVERYTHING! Whatever your kids end up doing is honestly fine and no need to stress.
It will make your photos go faster, and turn out so much better :) Thank you!
